Year 9

A Confident Start to GCSE Study

Year 9 at Collingham provides students aged 13+ with a dynamic and purposeful introduction to senior school learning. This carefully designed pre-GCSE year strikes the perfect balance: it gives students breadth and variety while gradually building focus and academic discipline in preparation for their GCSE programme.
Students typically study up to nine subjects, including core academic disciplines and a wide range of stimulating options. The curriculum draws on GCSE-level material, giving students early familiarity with the style, expectations, and rigour of public examinations—without the pressure of assessment just yet.
Whether students join from prep school, another secondary school, or from overseas, Year 9 offers a structured yet nurturing transition into the GCSE years.

A Rich, Diverse Curriculum

All students follow a broad curriculum that includes:

> Mathematics

> English Language & English Literature

> All Sciences

> A range of Humanities, including Religious Studies

> A Modern Language

> Creative Arts

> Games as part of our commitment to physical & mental wellbeing

> PSHE (Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education

Beyond the core, students choose from an exceptional range of subjects that reflect their interests, support their development, and keep future academic options open. Many of these are continued into Years 10 and 11. Optional Art Club and LAMDA lessons can be organised to encourage creative expression and build confidence.

Small Classes, Big Opportunities

With an average class size of just five students, and never more than nine, Year 9 at Collingham offers an environment where each student is known, supported, and challenged. Tutors adapt lessons to suit the needs and pace of individuals, and students are encouraged to participate actively—asking questions, sharing ideas, and engaging in lively discussions and debates.

This personalised attention helps students gain confidence, deepen their understanding, and establish excellent study habits early on.
