The Subject
Classical Greek offers students the opportunity to read a selection of literature by some of the great authors of antiquity in the original language. A GCSE in Classical Greek is normally required but the grammar and syntax taught at GCSE is reviewed and extended during the course. Texts include tragedy, history, epic poetry and speeches written for the law courts of Athens.
Classical Greek is an excellent subject to study alongside Ancient History, Latin, Classical Civilisation, English, Modern Languages, Mathematics and History.
The study of Classical Greek helps develop analytical and logical skills, as well as strengthening wider language comprehension.
The Course
An AS Level in Classical Greek involves an unseen language paper and a set text paper. The set text paper comprises one prose and one verse author, which changes every other year. Past authors have included Plato and Thucydides for prose, Homer and Sophocles for verse.
A Level students sit four exam papers. As well as an unseen language exam there is also an unseen comprehension paper. A Level students will also read two prose and two verse authors, who change every other year. Past authors have included Plato and Thucydides for prose, Homer and Sophocles for verse.
