Choosing the right GCSE college is one of the most important decisions a family makes. And it is a decision that brochures and websites can only take you so far with. At some point, you need to sit down with someone who actually knows the college, ask the questions that are genuinely on your mind, and get straight answers.
That is what the Head’s Coffee is for.
What is the Head’s Coffee?
The Head’s Coffee is a small, informal morning session hosted by Paul, Head of GCSE at Collingham. It takes place at the GCSE building at 16 Young Street, W8 – a short walk from High Street Kensington – and runs from 9.30am to 10.30am.
Sessions run across the academic year and are kept deliberately small – around 15 people, which typically means three or four families. That is the point. It is not a presentation to a room full of strangers. It is a conversation.
Current parents and students are present, which means you get to hear directly from families who have already been through the process, and from students who are in the middle of it. The questions they answer are the ones that actually matter: what is it really like? What was the transition like? Would they do it again?
Who is Paul?
Paul is Head of GCSE at Collingham and knows every GCSE student by name. The pastoral structure of the GCSE programme runs through him. He is the person who would be most involved in your child’s journey at Collingham, and the Head’s Coffee is your chance to meet him properly before making any decisions.
He will talk through how the GCSE programme works, what Collingham expects of its students, and what students and families can expect from the college in return. There is no script. If a question occurs to you, ask it.
What makes the Collingham GCSE different
The GCSE community at Collingham is a tight group based at 16 Young Street, W8 – a building with its own distinct identity. The site was once the home of William Makepeace Thackeray, who wrote Vanity Fair within these walls, with all three Bronte sisters among his regular guests. It is a calm, collegiate environment that does not feel like a school in the conventional sense.
Classes are capped at nine students, with an average of five. Teaching is delivered by subject specialists. There are no large year groups, no corridors full of noise, no uniform. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning from the start, with guidance and pastoral support built in at every step.
The January 2026 ISI inspection confirmed all standards were met, with inspectors specifically noting the strength of the college’s personalised support for GCSE students.
Is this the right fit for your child?
Collingham’s GCSE programme works best for students who need something different from what a large secondary school offers – whether that is because of how they learn, how they are taught, or the environment they need to thrive in. Some students join in Year 9, some in Year 10, and some come specifically to resit one or more GCSE subjects.
Whatever the reason, the Head’s Coffee is the best way to find out whether Collingham is right for your family. Not a prospectus. A proper conversation, over coffee, with the person who leads the programme.
