On Monday Evening our Electus students attended a lecture at The Royal Institution entitled ‘Why We Sleep’.
The lecture, given by Dr Matt Walker, a Neurologist and expert in the field of sleep psychiatry, covered the importance of sleep, the side effects from short and long term sleep deprivation, and new studies demonstrating the importance of sleep.
One of our students, Anna, told us a bit more about the talk:
“In his lecture Dr Walker educated us on how just one extra hour of sleep a night can reduce the likelihood of heart attacks, why we should never pull an all-nighter and how not getting enough sleep is driving us into early graves. Dr Walker also told us about a study in America in which schools put their starting time back an hour and saw their students achieve better grades, and be involved in fewer car accidents. I found this particularly interesting and comforting seeing as I start College later than most of my friends!”
The Collingham Electus Programme is designed to stretch our most able students in their first year of A Levels beyond the requirements of the examination syllabus. It does this by engaging them in a cross-curricular programme of activities and offering the opportunity to complete a dissertation on a subject of their choice. The programme enhances learning and strengthens students’ UCAS applications, particularly for Oxbridge entry.
